Commanding And Controlling Satellite Clusters
نویسندگان
چکیده
Directorate, we are developing architectures for commanding and controlling a cluster of cooperating satellites through autonomous software development for the TechSat 21 program (see the “TechSat 21” sidebar starting on page XX). Many space missions require large, monolithic satellites. This often results in costly, complex, failure-prone vehicles whose physical size constraints limit their performance characteristics. Recently, various organizations have begun to explore how distributed clusters of cooperating satellites can replace their larger monolithic counterparts to reduce overall costs, enhance mission performance, and increase system fault tolerance (see Figure 1).1 Large clusters of satellites flying in formation must have some level of onboard autonomy to • fly within specified tolerance levels; • avoid collisions; • address fault detection, isolation, and resolution (FDIR); • share knowledge; and • plan and schedule activities.

متن کاملCommand and Control of a Cluster of Satellites
There is an increasing desire in many organizations, including NASA and the DoD, to use constellations or fleets of autonomous spacecraft working together to accomplish complex mission objectives. At the Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) Space Vehicles Directorate we are investigating and developing architectures for commanding and controlling a cluster of cooperating satellites. For many ...
متن کاملGround-Based Control of Satellite Clusters
Air Force Research Laboratory's Distributed Architecture and Simulation Laboratory (DASL) is designed to support the development of new concepts in space systems. One new concept is AFRL’s TechSat 21 program. TechSat 21 is a cluster of formation-flying and cooperating satellites. TechSat 21 poses significant challenges to satellite operations. The ground control station must be capable of monit...
متن کاملSatellite Cluster Command and Control
For many applications a distributed cluster of cooperating satellites offers distinct advantages over satellites functioning alone. These include optimization of mission performance and increased fault tolerance. Although there are many benefits, commanding and controlling a large cluster of cooperating satellites poses several challenges. These include how satellites in the cluster maintain kn...

In July 2001, the Space Domain Task Force of the Object Management Group (OMG) issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) on Telemetric and Command Data Specification. This RFP solicited proposals that define telemetry and commanding data specifications in support of all phases of the satellite, payload, and ground segment lifecycle: system design, development, test, validation, and mission operations...
